Versatile Card Template

Here's how to make a card template you can reuse time and time again!

  1. Download this "card_template" file, and open it up on your desktop (File > Open).
  2. Get the Type tool and click and type a personal message on the left side of your card, e.g. the white side, which will be the back of the card. I typed "Made Especially for you by Linda."
  3. Get the Magic Wand tool and click on the gray part of the card to put a selection outline around it.
  4. Press Ctrl J (Mac: Cmd J) to copy it to a new layer.
  5. Click on the Create tab at the top of the Palette Bin, and click on Artwork just below the Create tab.
  6. Open the Content menu on the left and choose "By Type."
  7. Open the menu on the right and choose Frames.
  8. Choose a frame and click and drag it onto your card.
  9. Select the Move tool and make sure "Show Bounding Box" is checked in the Options Bar.
  10. Resize and rotate the frame as you wish. Click on the check mark next to the outline to accept it.
  11.  Save this file as a layered .psd file.

When you're ready to make a card:

  1. Open the card template (File > Open) and make a copy by choosing File > Duplicate.
  2. Close the original card template file, so you can reuse it later.
  3. Open a photo and use the Move tool to drag it into the frame on your card.
  4. Resize and rotate the photo as necessary.
  5. Click on the gray area to select it.
  6. Open some digital paper, and use the Move tool to move it onto your card above the gray area.
  7. Choose Layer > Group with Previous to make it conform to the gray area.
  8. Add any other embellishments and some type to finish the card.
  9. Choose File > Print and be sure to check "Print Crop Marks" in the "Output" section in the upper, right corner of the Print dialog box. That way you'll know where to cut around the back of the card, which is white.

Note: If you want to make a horizontal card, open the template and choose Image > Rotate > 900 right. You'll need to also rotate the personalization on the back of the card (Image > Rotate > Layer 900 right) and move it to the right spot.
